Job Corps Students Get Hands-on Training
Students at the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center in Kentucky have been hard at work. They have installed a broadband Internet system at their center, and did all the connections and the switches for three classrooms. Each classroom had 24 jacks and two computer labs that have the capacity for 24 computers each. Numerous LAN outlets had to be installed, which required the students to run over 5000 feet of Cat. 5, 4-pair cable. They also used the skills learned in Fiber Optics and installed two fiber optic cables that feed switches in the male dorm and also in the Construction Trade building.
Integrated Systems: Voice & Messaging has also proved to be very useful. Currently the center is remodeling, and during this time the students have moved numerous telephone extensions that required new 25-pair, Cat. 3 cables and blocks, since the current jacks were already full. In a few weeks, these students will be installing a PBX Telephone Systems for the male dorm. This telephone system will be connected to the pay phones in the male and female dorms and each student will have their own voice mail account. These students will also be programming the telephone switch and setting up the Voice Mail System.
Not only are these students doing work at their own center, but also at another Job Corps Center. Two students went to the Frenchburg Job Corps Center and repaired the fiber optic cable connections to the LAN. They also re-punched down the Cat. 5 cables that provide the connections for the computers.
The students in Tim Young's class are all applying the knowledge and skills learned in the C-Tech programs. Upon graduating, they will receive certifications in Copper, Fiber and ISVM and be more employable because of the three certifications and the hands-on training they received.
