C-Tech’s New Technology Programs
The Affordable Answer to NCLB
The initial results are in, and everyone involved at Sussex County Charter School concurs that the Communication Pathway Series™ (CPS) DELIVERS. Teachers Carolyn Sior, 8th Grade Math Teacher, and Pete Renna, Electronics, co-teach the Electronics "Tech Rotation" at the Charter School.
"It's refreshing," states Renna, "to be able to do something new in the classroom that benefits both the students and the teachers. We're dealing with concepts that affect the lives of our students daily, and the kids are having a lot of fun doing it." Soir agrees with her counterpart and adds, "It's very beneficial that all of the assessments are included with the programs, making implementation all that much easier."

CPS's refreshing uniqueness stimulates the inquisitive nature of students by utilizing communications technology, which can be discovered in every aspect of their environments. Teenagers and preteens can now gain insight into the “WOWS” of technology that are a part of their daily lives: cell phones and pagers, cable TV and the Internet, laptop computers and handheld video games, CDs, DVDs, and MP3 players. CPS uses this familiarity as a stimulus and framework for instruction in several other disciplines, but especially science and technology.
Students learn:

The Scientific Method—Students perform scientific inquiries on assigned topics and topics of their own choosing. They hypothesize, design and perform experiments, and draw conclusions from the results. They observe and record the results of their observations in written, graphic, and diagram form.

The Science of Optics—The workings of fiber optic cable provide a springboard for lessons in reflection, refraction, and diffraction, the speed of light, wavelengths and frequencies, the electromagnetic and visible spectrums, the metric system and scientific notation.

Mathematics and Geometry—including the geometry of circles, the geometry of angles, absolute and relative measurement, scientific notation, calculations using standard scientific equations, conversion strategies within the Metric system and between Metric and English units, detection and prediction of patterns, table lookups, the concept of inverse proportionality.

Electricity—Students build a working telegraph and learn about electric circuits, electromagnetism, magnetic fields and interpreting technical diagrams.
These cross curricular mini-programs (6-10hrs ea.) do not require expensive dedicated labs, are portable, and include History, Systems and Language Arts. CPS brings “career awareness” to the student through a variety of activities introducing career paths for students to explore.
