Fiber to the Home:
The Next Revolution is Upon Us
On May 30th, C-Tech informed you that three of
the nation's largest telecommunications service providers ― BellSouth, SBC
Communications Inc. and Verizon ― had adopted a set of
common technical requirements based on established industry standards and
specifications for a technology known as fiber to the premises (FTTP), or
fiber to the home (FTTH).
"Though broadband will be in about 30% of U.S.
households by the end of this year, fiber will drive more dramatic
capabilities into homes by delivering lightning-speed Internet, interactive
games, movies on demand, phone calls and high-definition TV," according to
Kevin Maney of USA Today.
This marks a tremendous opportunity for students
who are trained in C-Tech's latest Fiber Optics program, where in addition
to learning the fundamentals of fiber optic terminations,
students
terminate SC as well as ST connectors. Additionally, they will perform
a Mechanical Splice, an in-demand skill for this new technology. In
addition to these new hands-on activities, students will observe their
instructor perform a Lab Splice as well as view video presentations of the
“Crimp and Cleave” and Thread-Lock® termination practices (provided by
program recognizer Leviton Voice & Data) that include the termination of an
MT-RJ small-form factor connector, an innovative type of fiber connector.
Are you and your students prepared for the
next communications revolution?
