Hearing-Impaired "Hear" Tech Talk

On Friday, May 23, Ray Bruno, Vice-President, Marketing, from Specified Technologies, Inc., joined us for a Tech Talk entitled:  Firestopping, Saving Lives One Installation at a Time.  Dr. Bob Colyer, “The Voice of C-Tech,” was our moderator for the event.  Below is an excerpt from the session supplied by George Hockenberry of the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown, PA.  One of George’s students is hearing impaired.  Thus, in order for that student to participate, the school had a translator to create a simultaneous transcript of the Tech Talk.

Bob:  Were there any particular events that led to Firestopping being in the codes?

Ray:  The most significant single event was in Nevada in 1980, The MGM Grand Hotel.  There were no sprinklers, the fire spread; there were 84 deaths and 700 injuries.  And oddly, most of those deaths and injuries occurred far away from the fire on the upper floors.  It spread in a vertical fashion, 19 feet a second, through unprotected openings.
